You don't have to be a serious hiker to get into the mountains near Tokyo - several peaks are reachable in under 90 minutes and have cable cars to skip the steep parts. These are the best easy hikes for a day trip, with an honest note on how hard each really is.

    The hikes

    • Mt Takao (~50 min from Shinjuku) - the easiest and most popular. A paved main trail or cable car to near the summit; Fuji views on clear winter days. Trainers are fine.
    • Mt Mitake (~1.5 hrs) - a cable car lifts you to a mountain shrine village; gentle walks plus an optional scramble to Rock Garden and Ayahiro Falls.
    • Kamakura temple trails (~1 hr) - the Daibutsu and Tenen hiking courses link temples through the hills; short, shaded and easy to combine with sightseeing.
    • Nokogiriyama (Chiba, ~1.5-2 hrs incl. ferry) - 'sawtooth mountain' with a ropeway, a giant carved Buddha and the vertigo-inducing 'Hell Peek' viewpoint.

    Know before you go

    • Mt Takao gets very busy on autumn-foliage weekends - go early or midweek
    • Cable cars cut the effort but cost extra and have set hours - check the last descent time
    • Even easy trails are quieter and clearer in the cooler months; summer is humid and hazy
    • Carry water and wear grippy shoes for anything beyond Takao's paved trail

    Local angle

If it's your first hike in Japan, start with Mt Takao - you can ride the cable car up, walk the easy ridge, and be back in Shinjuku for dinner. For a bit more nature with a shrine-village feel, Mt Mitake is the step up. Both reward a clear, cool day, when Fuji often appears on the horizon. Times, fares and cable-car hours are estimates - confirm before you go.
