Kamakura is the easiest deep-local day trip from Tokyo — about an hour out, and walkable once you arrive. The single thing that separates a great day from a frustrating one is leaving early. Be at the Great Buddha and Komachi-dori before the late-morning rush and the whole town opens up.
Start at Kamakura Station, walk Komachi-dori while the shops are still calm, and finish at the broad shrine approach of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu.
Take the Enoden to Hase for the sea-view temple garden, then the short walk to the Great Buddha. Grab a shirasu (whitebait) bowl near Hase for lunch.
With time left, ride the Enoden along the coast to Enoshima for the island shrine and a sunset, or simply sit on Yuigahama beach as the day-trippers thin out.
Same highlights, half the day, zero planning.
