Relaxed day

You don't need an overnight ryokan stay to enjoy a Japanese hot spring - plenty of onsen towns near Tokyo offer day-bathing (higaeri onsen), so you can soak and be home by evening. These are the best onsen day trips from the city, plus a quick etiquette primer if it's your first time.

    Where to soak

    • Hakone (~1.5 hrs) - the classic. Dozens of day-bathing options, mountain scenery, plus art museums and a lake to fill the rest of the day.
    • Atami (~50 min by Shinkansen) - a retro seaside resort with hot springs and a beach; the quickest 'real onsen town' from Tokyo.
    • Kawaguchiko / Fuji Five Lakes (~2 hrs) - lakeside baths with Mt Fuji views on a clear day.
    • Ikaho / Kusatsu (Gunma, ~2.5-3 hrs) - further out and better as overnights, but legendary water if you have a long day.

    Onsen etiquette, quickly

    • Wash and rinse thoroughly at the seated showers before entering the bath - the bath is for soaking, not cleaning
    • No swimsuits; bathing is nude and usually sex-segregated
    • Keep the small towel out of the water - rest it on your head or the side
    • Tie up long hair so it doesn't touch the water
    • Tattoos can still be refused at some onsen - check ahead, or look for tattoo-friendly baths and private-bath (kashikiri) options

    Local angle

For a first onsen day trip, Hakone is the easiest - it's set up for visitors and you can pair the bath with the Open-Air Museum and the lake. Want minimum travel? Atami is under an hour by Shinkansen. If you have tattoos, book a private kashikiri bath in advance to avoid any awkwardness. Prices and opening hours for day-bathing vary - check each facility before you go.
