Fuji views
Kawaguchiko, Mishima
Tokyo is one of the best bases in the world for day trips - within two hours you can be at a coastal Buddha, a mountain onsen, a UNESCO shrine complex or the foot of Mt Fuji. After years of taking visitors out of the city, these are the 15 we recommend most, grouped by what you're in the mood for. Times are rough door-to-door estimates from central Tokyo.
Classics (do these first)
- Kamakura (~1 hr) - the Great Buddha, hydrangea temples and a beach town feel. The all-rounder first day trip.
- Hakone (~1.5 hrs) - hot springs, the Open-Air Museum, a lake and Fuji views on a clear day. The onsen classic.
- Nikko (~2 hrs) - the ornate Toshogu shrine, waterfalls and mountains. UNESCO heritage in cedar forest.
- Kawagoe (~45 min) - 'Little Edo' warehouse streets and sweet-potato treats, closest old-town fix.
For Mt Fuji & big views
- Kawaguchiko / Fuji Five Lakes (~2 hrs) - the postcard Fuji-and-lake shots and lakeside onsen.
- Mishima (~45-60 min by Shinkansen) - the Skywalk suspension bridge pointed straight at Fuji.
- Mt Takao (~50 min) - an easy hike-up, cable-car-down mountain with Fuji on the horizon.
Coast, onsen & relaxed
- Enoshima (~1 hr) - an island shrine, sea caves and sunset, easily paired with Kamakura.
- Atami (~50 min by Shinkansen) - a retro seaside onsen resort with a beach and fireworks.
- Yokohama (~30 min) - bayside Chinatown, a harbour park and easy city-by-the-sea energy.
Quieter & offbeat
- Chichibu (~90 min) - a mountain valley of shrines, gorge boats and spring pink-moss fields.
- Sawara (~90 min) - a quiet 'Little Edo' canal town in Chiba, near Narita Airport.
- Narita (~60 min) - far more than the airport: a grand temple and an old pilgrim street of eel restaurants.
- Yokosuka (~1 hr) - a US-navy port town of warships, navy burgers and an island ferry.
How to pick
If it's your first trip out, start with Kamakura or Hakone - they're close, well-signed and rewarding. Want guaranteed Fuji? Go to Kawaguchiko or Mishima on a clear morning. Travelling with kids or worried about rain? Yokohama and Hakone's museums hold up. And if you crave quiet, Chichibu and Sawara stay calm even on weekends. All travel times are estimates - confirm on a transit app.

Open the guide What is the best day trip from Tokyo? +
For a first trip, Kamakura (about an hour away) is the best all-rounder - the Great Buddha, temples and a beach town in one easy day. Hakone is the top pick for onsen and Fuji views, and Nikko for UNESCO shrines and nature.
How far can you day trip from Tokyo? +
Comfortably up to about two hours each way. That reaches Kamakura and Yokohama (under an hour), Hakone, Kawaguchiko and Mt Fuji-area towns (1.5-2 hrs), and Nikko (around 2 hrs) - all doable as a day return.
Which day trip from Tokyo is best for Mt Fuji? +
Kawaguchiko (Fuji Five Lakes) for the classic lake-and-Fuji view, or Mishima for the Skywalk's head-on view. Both are best on a clear morning before cloud builds over the mountain.
