Mount Takao is the ideal half-day escape: about 50 minutes from Shinjuku on the Keio line, a cable car to do the heavy lifting, and an easy paved trail to a real summit with a Fuji view. Go up the easy way, come down a quieter trail, and be back in the city by mid-afternoon.
The Keio line runs direct from Shinjuku; the limited-express 'Mt. Takao' is comfiest. The station is right at the trailhead.
Ride up to skip the steep start, then walk the paved trail past the temple with its tengu statues.
On a clear day Fuji sits on the horizon. Eat tororo soba at the top or on the way down.
You'll be at the station by early-to-mid afternoon — plenty of day left in the city.
Where else to get into the hills for a day.
