Rain at Kawaguchiko: Build the Day Around the Textile Museum

Rain forecast for Kawaguchiko. If seeing Mount Fuji is the point, checking whether you can move the booking is the faster move. If the exhibits and the hot spring are also part of why you came, there is a way to build the day. Give the morning to the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum
This is the museum for Itchiku Kubota's dyeing technique, Itchiku Tsujigahana. The fine patterning and the layered colour reveal themselves the longer you stand there — which makes it a good place to spend a wet morning.
Hours are 10:00 to 17:00 from April to November, with last admission at 16:30, and 10:00 to 16:30 from December to March, with last admission at 16:00. The garden and the approach are outdoors, so bring an umbrella and shoes you can walk in. Closing days move with the exhibition programme, so check the day you are going.
Take the Red Line, and fix your ride back first
From Kawaguchiko station it is about 10 minutes by taxi, or about 20 minutes on the Red Line of the Kawaguchiko sightseeing bus, getting off at the museum stop.
The bus's combined free coupon is ¥1,500 for adults and ¥750 for children for one day, ¥2,000 and ¥1,000 for two, valid on the Red, Green and Blue lines. Rain does not guarantee a seat. Do not plan to be at the lake until the last minute before your train or coach home.
Lunch: hoto, somewhere on the way back
After the exhibition, Yamanashi's hoto makes a warm lunch. Decide in advance whether you are eating near the museum or back at the station, and you cut out the time spent hunting for somewhere in the rain.
Opening days and last orders vary by shop, so check before you go. Rather than adding a second, more famous place further away, this day works better if you stretch it to include tea afterwards.
If you add the bath, book the shuttle first
Fuji Chobo no Yu Yurari is in Narusawa village, not on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi. It is not a walk from the museum.
The free shuttle from Kawaguchiko station must be booked online at least 1 hour before each departure. For the return to the station you sign up at the reception desk inside. Admission from 10:00 to 19:00 is ¥1,400 for adults on weekdays and ¥1,700 at weekends and on holidays; after 19:00 it is ¥1,200 and ¥1,500. Children aged 4 to elementary school age pay ¥750 and ¥800. Visitors with tattoos are not admitted. If the shuttle and your train home do not line up, end the day at the museum and lunch.
Save Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato for a day you can walk
Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba has thatched houses and craft workshops, but the space between the buildings is open air. Do not stack it onto the museum and the bath as a way of staying dry. [Iyashi-no-Sato information](https://saikoiyashinosatonenba.jp/)
On a day of light rain you could let it lead instead of the museum. Check that the workshop you want is open, and work out the Green Line there and back, before you decide.

Will I see Mount Fuji in the rain? +
There is no reliable way to know; cloud often stays after the rain stops. Treat a clear view as a bonus and decide in advance where you are going if it does not come.
Can I do the museum, Iyashi-no-Sato and the bath in one day? +
Not in the rain. Iyashi-no-Sato is open air between the buildings, and Yurari is in Narusawa and needs a shuttle booking. Anchor the day on the museum and lunch, then decide whether to add one more thing.

Can I just turn up for the hot spring shuttle? +
No. Each departure must be booked online at least 1 hour ahead. Without a booking you cannot board, and you also lose the seat if you arrive after the departure time. The return is arranged at Yurari's reception.
