Nikko is two trips in one: an ornate shrine town down low, and a mountain world of waterfalls and a lake up high. It's about two hours from Tokyo and rewards a full day — and it's arguably the best autumn-colour day trip in the region. Here's what's worth your time, and how to split it.

    Down in the town

    • Toshogu Shrine: the lavishly carved mausoleum of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu — the headline sight
    • Shinkyo Bridge: the iconic red bridge over the river at the entrance to the shrine area
    • Rinno-ji and Futarasan shrine: the rest of the UNESCO-listed cluster, walkable together
    • Edo Wonderland (nearby): a samurai-era theme park, good with kids

    Up in the mountains

    • Kegon Falls: a near-100m waterfall, dramatic with an elevator down to a viewing deck
    • Lake Chuzenji: a serene highland lake under the volcano Nantai
    • Irohazaka winding road: the hairpin route up — peak autumn colour in October

    How to split the day

You can't leisurely do both halves and linger, so choose: shrine-focused (town all day) or nature-focused (a quick shrine visit, then the bus up to the falls and lake). In autumn, the mountains are the priority; in summer, they're a cool escape.

What is Nikko known for? +

The lavish Toshogu shrine and UNESCO temple cluster, the red Shinkyo bridge, and the mountain scenery of Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji — especially stunning in autumn.

How long do you need in Nikko? +

A full day. You'll likely choose between the shrine town and the mountains (falls and lake) rather than doing both at leisure; an overnight lets you cover both.
