Nikko is mostly a Tobu railway trip. The cleanest route is from Asakusa on the Tobu line — and because the mountain sights need buses, the area pass that bundles trains and buses is usually the smart buy. Here's how to get there and what to book.
If you'll go up to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji, get a Tobu Nikko area pass — it covers the round-trip plus the local buses you'll otherwise pay for piecemeal. If you're staying in the shrine town only, the pass matters less. Reserve a Spacia seat on busy autumn weekends; ordinary trains can be standing-room.
Take the Tobu line from Asakusa to Tobu-Nikko (~2 hrs; the reserved Spacia is fastest and most comfortable). A JR route via Utsunomiya Shinkansen also works but costs more.
Yes if you head up to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji — it bundles the round-trip with the local buses. For a shrine-town-only visit it's less essential.
