Nikko is mostly a Tobu railway trip. The cleanest route is from Asakusa on the Tobu line — and because the mountain sights need buses, the area pass that bundles trains and buses is usually the smart buy. Here's how to get there and what to book.

    The routes

    • Asakusa → Tobu-Nikko on the Tobu line: ~2 hrs on rapid trains; the reserved 'Spacia' limited express is faster and comfier (small surcharge)
    • JR route: Shinkansen to Utsunomiya, then the JR Nikko line — faster on paper but more expensive and a transfer
    • From Shinjuku: select direct limited-express services (JR–Tobu through-trains) on certain departures

    Which pass?

If you'll go up to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji, get a Tobu Nikko area pass — it covers the round-trip plus the local buses you'll otherwise pay for piecemeal. If you're staying in the shrine town only, the pass matters less. Reserve a Spacia seat on busy autumn weekends; ordinary trains can be standing-room.

How do you get to Nikko from Tokyo? +

Take the Tobu line from Asakusa to Tobu-Nikko (~2 hrs; the reserved Spacia is fastest and most comfortable). A JR route via Utsunomiya Shinkansen also works but costs more.

Is the Tobu Nikko pass worth it? +

Yes if you head up to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji — it bundles the round-trip with the local buses. For a shrine-town-only visit it's less essential.
