Nikko is doable in a day, but it's a long-ish one — two hours each way — so the plan lives or dies by an early start and one honest choice: shrines or mountains. Trying to cram both at leisure is the classic mistake. Here's how locals do it.

    1

Get there early (Tobu from Asakusa)

Take an early Tobu line train from Asakusa — the reserved Spacia is comfiest. Buy the Tobu Nikko area pass for the trains plus local buses.

Local tip: First trains beat the tour groups to Toshogu and the falls.

    2

Choose your half — A) The shrines

    Stay 180 min

Shinkyo bridge, then Toshogu and the UNESCO temple cluster. Ornate, dense with carving, and walkable as a group.

Local tip: Go straight to Toshogu on arrival; it's busiest mid-day.
    Walk between the shrine cluster
    3

    Or B) The mountains

    Stay 200 min

A quick look at Shinkyo, then the bus up the Irohazaka switchbacks to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji.

Local tip: In autumn the mountain road jams — go up early and come down before the afternoon rush.
    4

Head back before the evening crush

Reserve a return Spacia seat; the last comfortable trains fill quickly, especially in autumn.

Local tip: Don't leave the return to chance on peak-colour weekends.

    Good to know

Is Nikko worth a day trip from Tokyo? +

Yes, if you start early and pick one focus — the Toshogu shrines or the mountain falls and lake. It's about 2 hours each way, so it's a full day; an overnight lets you do both.

How do you get to Nikko from Tokyo? +

Take the Tobu line from Asakusa (~2 hrs; the reserved Spacia is most comfortable). The Tobu Nikko area pass bundles the trains with the local buses you'll need for the falls.
