Yokosuka is rarely crowded, so the pacing here is about the ferry and the light rather than beating the queues. This route front-loads the battleship, builds in a long lunch on Dobuita Street, sends you out to Sarushima in the early afternoon, and brings you back to the port for sunset over the fleet.
Open at the museum ship as it unlocks - board the deck and bridge of the 1905 flagship and read the Russo-Japanese War history below.
Work the Americana strip - a navy burger or navy curry, then browse the sukajan jacket shops and bars.
Cross to the uninhabited island, walk the trail through ivy-covered WWII forts, and spend an hour at the small beach.
Wind down at the French-style waterfront garden, watching the naval ships across the harbour as the light drops.
Comfortably - a full day covers Battleship Mikasa, a long lunch on Dobuita Street, the Sarushima island ferry and a sunset at the port. A half-day works if you skip the island.
Midweek and mornings are quietest. Mikasa is calmest right at opening, and the Sarushima ferry is busiest on summer weekends - go off-season or early for space.
