Yokohama is the easy-going opposite of Tokyo's intensity: a breezy bay, Japan's biggest Chinatown, brick warehouses turned shops, and a skyline that's best after dark. It's half an hour out and works brilliantly as an evening as much as a day. Here's what's worth your time.

    What's worth doing

    • Minato Mirai waterfront: the harbour district — ferris wheel, towers, sea air
    • Yokohama Chinatown: the largest in Japan — graze dumplings and steamed buns
    • Red Brick Warehouse: historic brick halls now full of shops and events by the water
    • Cup Noodles Museum: surprisingly fun, design-your-own cup — great with kids or without
    • Sankeien Garden: a classic landscaped garden, calm and underrated
    • Night skyline: the bay lights up — the best time to be here

    Local angle

Most visitors rush Minato Mirai by day; locals come in the late afternoon, eat through Chinatown at dusk, and watch the harbour light up. The Air Cabin ropeway and the harbour walk are at their best then. Save Sankeien for a calm morning if you want greenery without crowds.
