Hakone's signature shot — the red Hakone Shrine torii on the lake with Mt Fuji behind — is real, but it takes timing and a little luck with the weather. Here are the spots worth the walk and when the light (and the queue) cooperate.

    The spots, and when

    • Hakone Shrine torii on Lake Ashi: the icon — shoot early for calm water, clear Fuji and a shorter line
    • Owakudani: steam and sulfur drama; overcast adds mood, clear days add Fuji to the west
    • Tozan railway in June: hydrangea lining the switchbacks — lean out (safely) at the slow curves
    • Lake Ashi from the boat: Fuji over the water on the crossing, if the summit is out
    • Open-Air Museum: sculpture against sky — flat grey light flatters it

    Tips

The torii line can run 30+ minutes mid-afternoon — come at opening or near closing. Fuji is a morning act in autumn and winter; by afternoon clouds usually crown it. A 24–70mm covers everything from the torii to the steam vents.

Where is the famous Hakone torii photo? +

At Hakone Shrine on Lake Ashi — the vermilion torii stands in the water, with Mt Fuji behind on clear days. Come early to beat the line and catch calm water.

Best time for photos in Hakone? +

Early morning, especially autumn and winter, for clear Fuji and calm light. The torii queue and afternoon clouds both build as the day goes on.
