Hakone's signature shot — the red Hakone Shrine torii on the lake with Mt Fuji behind — is real, but it takes timing and a little luck with the weather. Here are the spots worth the walk and when the light (and the queue) cooperate.
The torii line can run 30+ minutes mid-afternoon — come at opening or near closing. Fuji is a morning act in autumn and winter; by afternoon clouds usually crown it. A 24–70mm covers everything from the torii to the steam vents.
