Best Time to Visit Hakone

hakone, Japan
Short answer

For Mt Fuji views, go on a clear morning in autumn or winter — that's when the air is clearest and the summit shows. For colour, June brings hydrangea along the railway and November the autumn maples. Any season, start the loop early and weekday if you can.

Month by month

  • Apr–May: fresh green, mild; Golden Week (early May) is very busy
  • Jun: hydrangea lines the Tozan railway; rainy season, but mist on the mountains is its own mood
  • Jul–Aug: warm, lush; afternoon clouds usually hide Fuji
  • Oct–Nov: best all-rounder — comfortable, clear, autumn colour peaks early-to-mid November
  • Dec–Feb: cold but the clearest Fuji odds, and onsen feel best in winter

Times to avoid

Golden Week and autumn-colour weekends are the busiest, with long waits for the ropeway and boat. A weekday in shoulder season is the sweet spot — and on any day, doing the loop clockwise from early morning keeps you ahead of the crowds.
