Enoshima is a small offshore island connected by a bridge — a breezy half-day of shrine, sea caves and one of the best sunsets near Tokyo. It pairs naturally with Kamakura (ten minutes on the Enoden), and it's lighter and more kid-friendly than the temple town. Here's what's worth your time.

    What to do

    • Enoshima Shrine: three halls climbing the island, dedicated to the goddess Benten
    • Sea Candle (observation tower) & Samuel Cocking Garden: 360° views over the bay to Fuji
    • Iwaya Caves: atmospheric sea caves at the island's far tip
    • Shirasu (whitebait) lunch: the local seafood, raw in season or as a rice bowl
    • Sunset over the bay: the island faces west — the reason to stay late
    • The 'escar' outdoor escalators if you'd rather skip the climb up

    Local angle

The island is small but vertical — there are stairs, though paid outdoor escalators help. Most day-trippers leave by late afternoon, so the caves and sunset are calmest then. Combine with Kamakura: temples in the morning, Enoshima for the evening.
