This route is built to flex: do it as a relaxed half-day from Tokyo, or compress it into a long layover. The whole loop is downhill to the temple and back, so it's gentle - the main thing on a layover is leaving a real buffer for the return and security.

    1

Drop bags & start the approach

    Stay 30 min

Use station or airport lockers, then walk down the Omotesando approach, scouting an eel restaurant for later.

Local tip: Travelling on a layover? Lighter is better - lockers are cheap and everywhere.
    Downhill ~10 min
    2

    Naritasan Shinshoji

    Stay 70 min

Explore the temple's main hall, pagodas and quieter sub-halls.

Local tip: It's larger than expected; budget more time than the map suggests.
    Walk through to the park
    3

    Naritasan Park

    Stay 45 min

A green, calm landscaped park directly behind the temple - a nice breather.

Local tip: Skip if your layover is tight; it's the most optional stop.
    Back up the approach
    4

    Unagi lunch, then back

    Stay 60 min

Reward the walk with grilled eel on the approach before heading to the station or airport.

Local tip: Layover rule: be back at the terminal at least 2 hours before your flight.
    Getting there

    Trains and the airport hop

From Tokyo or straight from the terminals.

    Good to know

How long do you need in Narita? +

About 3-5 hours covers the temple, approach street, park and an eel lunch. On a layover, 5+ hours of wait makes a comfortable visit with a security buffer.

Is Narita doable on a layover? +

Yes - the town is ~10 minutes from the terminals. Use lockers, do the temple and an eel lunch, and return at least 2 hours before your flight.
