Getting to Chichibu is refreshingly simple: one Seibu line runs straight there from Ikebukuro. The only real choice is whether to pay a little extra for the reserved-seat express or save money on the local trains. Here's how a local decides.

    The options

    • Seibu Red Arrow 'Laview' from Ikebukuro to Seibu-Chichibu: direct, reserved seats, ~80 min, around ¥1,500 with the limited-express surcharge
    • Seibu local + Express (no surcharge) from Ikebukuro: change at Hanno, ~100 min, cheaper but unreserved
    • JR + Chichibu Railway via Kumagaya: a longer alternative, useful if you start in north/east Tokyo
    • Within Chichibu: the local Chichibu Railway links the town to Nagatoro gorge

    Local tip

On a spring or autumn weekend, reserve the Laview in advance - it sells out around shibazakura season and the carriage's huge windows are made for the mountain run. Midweek, the no-surcharge express is fine. Fares and times are estimates; confirm on a transit app before you travel.
